It was at a very young age that Terri remembers always having a
pencil in her hand and knew early on that she had a strong desire to
create art.
“Drawing the figure really was my first introduction to
Classical Art”. It became a growing fascination to see the human form in
all its beauty and complexities. At age 26, Terri decided to enroll in a
rigorous art program at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado with
the encouragement of Professor Ed Clemmer, a Sculptor and teacher. Ed
Clemmer was very intent on teaching his students to draw the human
skeleton before they were allowed to draw skin and muscle. It was Ed
Clemmer who taught me to see beyond the human form.
In 1993, Terri returned to her hometown of Colorado Springs
with her family and continued her study of the human figure at Bemis Art
School. Five years later she found Cottonwood Artist's School and was
moved by the talented artists who studied there. This was a turning
point for Terri and a journey begun. With great vigor, she plunged right
into painting and found herself completely absorbed. She began to take
classes and workshops from well-known artists Chuck Mardoz, Eric
Michaels, Ralph Oberg, Teresa Vito, Dan Schultz, Mary Dolph Wood, and
Sparky Lebold. She hungered for the knowledge and tools needed to
realize her dream of becoming a professional artist. Terri began to seek
critiques from artists she admired. She read books about artists
deceased and living and painted miles and miles of canvas. Terri was
determined and focused.
Terri found herself captivated by the study of outdoor painting
called “Plein Air Painting”. “Painting outdoors is a completely
exhilarating experience and I seem to paint feverishly to capture that
perfect light or shadow in the constant changing weather conditions”.
Nature has proven time and time again to be the perfect teacher. “When
painting outdoors you are completely and fully engaged in that moment in
time and very intent on capturing that feeling on canvas.”
Today, Terri continues to hone her drawing skills with the
human form and concentrates on painting landscapes and still lifes. With
the help and support of her husband Steve, children Steven and Rosie,
Terri has steadily gained recognition for her work. Her work hangs in
Corporate and Private Collections all around the United States.
“To be able to recreate God's beauty is a tremendous priviledge
for me and for that I am eternally grateful and humbled”.
